about
An anthem for a good night’s sleep, with an earworm hook straight from the bird’s beak.
A comforting, joyous ditty about connection to other beings and the natural world.
Kurraka is the Kaurna (pronounced garr-na) name for the ubiquitous black and white dinosaur known commonly as the Australian magpie, a bird that is peerless in its songmaking. We were born and have lived on Kaurna Country, surrounded by many Kaurna language names. It is a joy to have a word for the complex creatures that share our suburban Adelaide garden.
Inspired by Magnus / Agnes our transgender (perhaps more about our false assumptions) magpie / piping shrike / Gymnorhina tibicen / emblem of South Australia singing this simple refrain (as recorded) every 15 seconds from 2 until dawn for weeks. With love from Chris & Andy
lyrics
KURRAKA (Songbird in the Night)
BUNNEY LUNAM
(Birdsong introduction)
As you lie awake in your bed
With those worries going round your head
Here’s an early worm for your ear
(Birdsong riff)
I’m the sentinel of your dreams
Guardian angel that goes unseen
Keeping vigil til the break of day
So you can sink down, drift away
Chorus:
You’re not alone
It’s alright
You’re not alone
Songbird in the night
Instrumental bridge
I could fly into the starry night
Disappear by the pale moonlight
But there is no better place to be
Than still, in your tree
Chorus
Instrumental verse
I’m the sentinel of your dreams
Guardian angel that goes unseen
Keeping vigil til the break of day
So you can sink down, drift away
Chorus
Coda: (Turnaround G Em C D)
